The fruit of almond is a drupe which consists of a hard shell with a seed inside. The hard shell is removed and the soft seed is obtained which is edible.
The binomial name of almond is Prunus Dulcis.
Almonds are mainly of two types. They are:-
- Sweet Almonds:- The seeds of almonds are generally sweet in taste.
- Bitter Almonds:- They are slightly broader and shorter than the sweet almonds. It consists of benzaldehyde which is responsible for the bitter taste. It also contains hydrogen cyanide in it yielding around 4-9 mg. These are used for their medicinal value but the cyanide should be removed before consumption.
Almonds can be consumed directly, prefer eating empty stomach as it increases the absorption of the nutrients. Soaked almonds overnight are best if consumed daily every morning.
